Five Secrets to Cleaning
Secret #1To reduce the number of cleaning products in your house, invest in a few microfiber cloths, which clean effectively with just water. They use static electricity to attract dirt, dust and pet hair, and tackle dirt and grease as well. Plus, they can be tossed in the washer and reused again and again. Secret #2Tap into the power of your dishwasher. You can use it to clean toys, knickknacks, oven vents, stove knobs, even light fixtures. The drying phase is the harshest part of the cycle, so if you're not sure an item is dishwasher safe, don't set the machine to dry. Secret #3"Set a timer before you start working," says the "Queen of Clean" Linda Cobb, who suggests getting the whole family involved in the job. "Give yourself and your helpers 60 minutes and have everybody pitch in. When the timer rings, stop - even if you're not done - and go off for some family fun." Secret #4The best offense is a good defense, and that's entirely true with housecleaning. A key piece of equipment in the battle against dirt is a doormat. Place one inside and outside every entrance to your house. They remove the majority of dirt, gravel, and water from people's shoes - before they can track it inside, grind it into carpets, and cause wear and tear on floors. Secret #5Can't seem to remove that ring of sludge from around the sink? Use an old toothbrush to get into tiny nooks and crannies. |
